Aninver Development Partners SL (www.aninver.com) is looking for a Landfill Gas (LFG) Specialist for a consultancy assignment financed by United Nations in Mozambique.
We are seeking a qualified Landfill Gas (LFG) Specialist to join our international expert team. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in designing practical, cost-effective, and implementation-oriented LFG management and methane mitigation solutions for key waste disposal facilities, including sites approaching closure and newly engineered sanitary landfills.
Aninver is preparing a proposal for this assignment. The selected expert will be part of the proposed team; the engagement is conditional on the contract being awarded to Aninver. The full Terms of Reference for the position are shared with shortlisted candidates.
Objectives of the assignment
- Establish a robust technical basis for landfill gas planning by quantifying methane generation and emissions under current and projected conditions.
- Assess and identify feasible LFG management options, focusing on low-cost, low-risk mitigation measures such as passive gas management, flaring, cover improvements, and biological methane oxidation.
- Evaluate LFG management strategies for new sanitary landfill infrastructure, including the design, phasing, and optimization of gas collection and flaring systems.
- Develop site-specific, decision-ready concepts for LFG management, integrating preliminary system configurations with broader site development and closure activities.
- Assess the environmental, climate, and financial performance of proposed LFG options, including greenhouse gas mitigation benefits and cost sensitivities.
Scope of work
- Conduct inception activities, document reviews, and mandatory site visits to assess existing disposal sites and ongoing solid waste management investments.
- Perform data compilation, analysis, and methane generation modeling using appropriate estimation approaches to establish baseline conditions.
- Evaluate feasible LFG management options tailored to distinct operational lifecycles and contexts of active dumpsites and engineered sanitary landfills.
- Develop conceptual planning and preliminary technical designs for gas collection, flaring, and potential energy utilization.
- Prepare implementation-oriented technical outputs, including technical specifications, design criteria, and performance requirements for priority methane mitigation measures.
- Facilitate technical reviews, stakeholder validation workshops, and provide ongoing support for municipal and government approvals.
Your role as Landfill Gas (LFG) Specialist
- Lead technical tasks related to landfill gas systems, LFG modeling, emission estimation, and methane mitigation strategies.
- Quantify methane generation and emissions for both aging dumpsites and modern sanitary landfills under varying operational scenarios.
- Design and evaluate passive and active LFG management options, flaring systems, and cover improvements appropriate for sites approaching closure.
- Assess the feasibility and timing of potential gas utilization options and integration with existing operational frameworks.
- Prepare detailed technical specifications, design criteria, and procurement support documentation for priority interventions.
- Collaborate closely with team members and local municipal authorities to ensure alignment with broader solid waste management objectives.
Requirements
- Education: Degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in landfill gas systems, LFG modeling, emission estimation, and methane mitigation
Desirable
- Previous professional experience working on solid waste management and methane mitigation projects in Mozambique or the broader Sub-Saharan Africa region.
- Familiarity with United Nations or international donor-funded project procedures and requirements.
- Experience collaborating with municipal councils and local stakeholders in developing countries.
An experienced Landfill Gas Specialist with at least 15 years of expertise in LFG modeling, emission estimation, and methane mitigation, ready to drive sustainable waste management solutions in Mozambique.
