Aninver Development Partners is seeking qualified candidates for the Short-term expert pool 1 position for an upcoming agribusiness consultancy assignment in Nigeria. Implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH alongside European and German institutional partners, the broader initiative supports sustainable socio-economic development, green economy transformation, and the integration of smallholder farmers, women, and youth into inclusive agricultural value chains.

The expert pool will play a critical role in advancing value chain development and fostering inclusive business models across focal agricultural sectors such as cocoa, dairy, ginger, and tomato. Selected experts will provide targeted technical advice, support the implementation of ongoing private sector partnerships, and assist in initiating a second wave of development partnerships to drive sustainable growth, employment, and climate-smart agricultural investments in the country.

Aninver is preparing a proposal for this assignment. The selected expert will be part of the proposed team; the engagement is conditional on the contract being awarded to Aninver. The full Terms of Reference for the position are shared with shortlisted candidates.

Objectives of the assignment

• Support the implementation and monitoring of the first batch of integrated development partnerships with the private sector.
• Assist in the initiation, partner outreach, and evaluation for the second batch of private sector partnerships.
• Enhance inclusive business models integrating smallholders, women, and youth into viable agricultural value chains.
• Promote climate-smart solutions, food security, and socially responsible agribusiness investments.
• Strengthen coordination and knowledge sharing among key stakeholders and value chain actors.

Scope of work

• Review partnership agreements, work plans, and monitoring frameworks for initial private sector partnerships.
• Provide operational, financial, and strategic coaching to project teams and agribusiness partners during implementation.
• Conduct field visits to verify progress, identify risks, and document lessons learned across focal value chains.
• Update assessment criteria and evaluation tools for the second batch of partnerships based on prior lessons learned.
• Support outreach, screening, and prioritisation of potential private sector partners to build a robust pipeline.
• Facilitate stakeholder workshops, peer learning events, and capacity-building sessions for project enablers and partners.

Your role as Short-term expert pool 1

• Advise on the setup and scaling of development partnerships with the private sector within agricultural value chains.
• Provide hands-on coaching and troubleshooting support to address operational and strategic bottlenecks during implementation.
• Support the development and application of monitoring tools, data collection frameworks, and progress reporting templates.
• Contribute to the identification, screening, and evaluation of new candidate companies for the second batch of partnerships.
• Facilitate stakeholder meetings, negotiation processes, and collaborative planning sessions with lead agribusiness firms.
• Design and deliver training materials and virtual coaching sessions for project staff and local consultants.
• Document best practices, lessons learned, and strategic recommendations to ensure quality management and replication.

Requirements

• Education: University degree (German 'Diplom'/Master) in agricultural economy, business management or similar relevant field
• 5 years of experience in value chain development
• 5 years' professional experience in advising on inclusive business models in agricultural value chain development
• 1 project reference in Nigeria
• 3 years working experience in African countries
• 2 project references in countries outside Africa
• 3 years in advising on the setup of development partnerships with the private sector / iDPPs
• Languages: Business fluency in English language (oral and written, C1 level)

Desirable

• Prior experience working on GIZ-funded or donor-supported agricultural and private sector development initiatives.
• Familiarity with cocoa, dairy, ginger, or tomato value chains in West Africa.
• Proven track record in mainstreaming climate-smart agricultural solutions and supporting youth and women in agribusiness.

An experienced agribusiness and inclusive business specialist with extensive international background in value chain development, private sector partnerships, and agricultural transformation in Africa.
