Description

Aanleiding voor de opstart van de ecohydrologische studie zijn de stabiliteitsproblemen in de plas Kikbeek, waardoor de peilstijgingen in functie van bereiken van de instandhoudingsdoelstellingen momenteel niet kunnen doorgaan. Om te onderzoeken wat de effecten zijn van hogere plaspeilen (dan de huidige) in de Kikbeekgroeve op de omliggende grondwaterafhankelijke vegetaties is voorwerp van de ecohydrologische studie. Bijkomend wordt onderzocht welke aanvullende maatregelen voor vernatting in het habitatrichtlijngebied de Mechelse Heide, Ziepbeekvallei, Neerharerheide en Asbeek noodzakelijk zijn om tot een klimaatrobuust systeem te komen. Doel van de studie is het onderzoek naar de impact op grondwaterstanden en de randvoorwaarden vanuit ecologie door peilstijgingen van de plas Kikbeek en van hydrologische herstelmaatregelen in het de Mechelse Heide, Ziepbeek, Neerharerheide en Asbeek. Dit moet leiden tot het maximaliseren van het herstel en de instandhouding van de grondwaterafhankelijke vegetaties. Doelstelling is te komen tot klimaatrobuust systeemherstel, zonder de kritieke infrastructuur (zoals de autosnelweg E314) en de stabiliteit van de groeve Berg en de Kikbeekplas op lange termijn te hypothekeren. De opmaak van hydrologische en ecologische modelvoorspellingen moeten dienen om scenario’s voor peilstijging in de plas Kikbeek te onderzoeken en de ontwikkeling van natte natuur in het habitatrichtlijngebied van de Mechelse Heide uit te werken en te evalueren.
