BOC BG University Hospital Bergmannsheil - Fire Protection - Object Planning

The Berufsgenossenschaftliche Universitätsklinikum Bergmannsheil gGmbH (hereinafter referred to as AG) is one of the nine acute clinics of statutory accident insurance and a subsidiary of BG Kliniken gGmbH. BG Kliniken are medical service providers for statutory accident insurance. Their main task is to treat and rehabilitate severely injured accident victims and people with occupational diseases. In nine acute clinics, one clinic for occupational diseases, one rehabilitation clinic, and two outpatient facilities, BG Kliniken treat over half a million patients annually nationwide. With over 15,000 employees, BG Kliniken is one of the largest clinic groups in Germany. Furthermore, Bergmannsheil is one of the largest maximum care acute clinics in the Ruhr area. Founded in 1890 as the world's first accident clinic for the treatment of injured miners, Bergmannsheil today combines 23 highly specialized clinics and departments under one roof. Approximately 2,200 employees ensure the care of around 84,000 patients per year. In 1977, Bergmannsheil became a university hospital of Ruhr University Bochum, along with other clinics from the Bochum area. The "Bochum Model," initially started as a temporary solution, was later developed into a permanent one. As a university hospital, research and teaching are also conducted at Bergmannsheil. The hospital building is characterized by a variety of different buildings, different construction methods, and construction years. The buildings are partially connected, partially freestanding. For this reason, a fire protection status analysis and assessment was carried out in 2021. This was subsequently translated into a target fire protection plan. The identified deficiencies will be addressed within the scope of this project "Fire Protection Measures." As part of the status analysis and assessment conducted in 2021, existing fire protection deficiencies and the resulting needs for action were recorded on a building-by-building basis. The buildings considered were 1 (low-rise building), 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, 15, 16, 41. Buildings 51, 2, and 6 were not considered in the status analysis due to their current construction years. Due to a fire drill by the Bochum fire department during ongoing operations, the need to retrofit a BOS system in the 1st construction phase of buildings 2 and 6 also arose. The same applies to the utility tunnel. Fire protection deficiencies were also identified here during subsequent inspections. Points from the fire protection inspection report dated March 25, 2025, were added to the measures catalog for the utility tunnel. In addition, for a comprehensive consideration of fire protection, requirements for the fire protection of building 7 were added to the measures catalog. It is planned to eliminate the required fire protection measures in buildings 1 (low-rise building), 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 15, 16, 41, and in the utility tunnel according to the status analysis, as well as to retrofit the BOS system in the 1st construction phase of buildings 2 and 6. In parallel, a revision of the overall target plan for the clinic site is currently underway, which is expected to be completed by mid-2026. A decision on the future use of buildings 4, 5, 7, 8, and 41, as well as their structural implementation, will also be made within this framework. The remaining service life of the buildings requires, regardless of the outcome of this target plan, that they also be upgraded in terms of fire protection. A structured fire protection inventory must be carried out to fully assess the structural condition, including buildings of more recent construction years (buildings 2 and 6, 2nd construction phase, building 51).
