Description

Objective: To develop a versatile demonstration model of Cryocooler Electronics, suitable for a Medium Category Cryocooler.Description: Availability of an off-the-shelf Cryocooler Electronics that is versatile, affordable and readily available could decrease the costs and schedule risks of payloads requiring cryocooled focal planes. Cryocooler Units (CCU) - the full cryocooler delivered assembly - rely on a driver unit called "Cryocooler Electronics" (CCE) that has multiple control functions, such as providing and regulating electrical power, temperature control, micro-vibrations control and launch locking. These CCEs tend to be custom-made for eachcryocooler and mission due to specific needs, such as the cryocooler nature itself, its operating principle, the electrical input power range, bus power interfaces, TM/TC protocol, and other requirements. This bespoke nature makes the CCE a driver in the cryocooler's deliverable critical path and an important barrier to overall Cryocooler Unit affordability. The activity conducts a review of the most relevant use cases, such as Earth Observation optical instrument focal plane cooling, low-earth orbit constellations requiring cryocooling, and space science observatories. The review shall result with identified the main interface requirements and designdrivers that can lead to differentiated CCE designs. The most promising set of interface and functional requirements shall be selected that will render the Versatile CCE with the broadest cross-cutting compatibility across said platforms. Following this a CCE demonstration model design is manufactured and tested. The activity encompasses the following tasks: - Reviewing and setting the requirements applicable to the Cryocooler Electronics, referring to multiple use cases and cryocooler natures in the 60W class; - CCE design and breadboard tests - CCE demonstration model manufacturing - CCE demonstration model testing - Way forward for industrialisationDeliverables: Breadboard, Report
