Beneficiul major care justifică implementarea unei rețele de tren metropolitan îl reprezintă faptul că acest tip de transport îmbină avantajele esențiale ale transportului urban (în cazul de față cu tramvaiul și autobuzul) cu cele ale trenului regional în zonele suburbane, contribuind semnificativ la reducerea numărului de autoturisme, ajutând astfel la diminuarea emisiilor de gaze cu efect de seră generate de sectorul transporturilor. Drept urmare se va achiziționa materialul rulant necesar precum și serviciile accesorii de mentenanță a acestora, pe parcursul perioadei de funcționare.
