Auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen Rangierbahnhofs in Hamburg-Eidelstedt wurde am 26. April 1991 das erste ICE-Werk der Deutschen Bahn in Deutschland offiziell in Betrieb genommen. Den Kern bildet die 430 Meter lange und 65 Meter breite Halle. Im Werk Eidelstedt sind der ICE 1, der ICE 4 und die Lok der Baureihe 101 beheimatet. Zusätzlich werden vermehrt die ICE T (Baureihen 411) instandgehalten. Der Einsatz der ICE ist durch hohe Laufleistungen geprägt. Um den planmäßigen Einsatz und die technische Zuverlässigkeit zu gewährleisten, sind regelmäßige Instandhaltungsintervalle vorgesehen. Im Werk Eidelstedt werden Triebzüge auf acht etwa 400 Meter langen Hallengleisen instandgehalten. Der Gleisabstand beträgt etwa 8 Meter.
