Description
Through the development of the Copernicus Space Component (CSC) Ground Segment ESA has established an Earth Observation (EO) Operations Framework that encompasses all the activities necessary to successfully deliver the expected level of CSC Operations entrusted to ESA (i.e. establishment and maintenance of the Ground Segment architecture baseline, procurement actions, operations management, reporting, etc.). The Bureau d'Etudes is intended to provide the engineering expertise to manage analysis, surveys, audit and study of technology aspects of interest and relevant to the ESA EO Operations. The Bureau assists in formulating long term plans for the evolution of the CSC Operations based on the review of technology trends and an overview of the upcoming CSC missions, in particular for the challenges related to their high performance computing requirements. Activities relevant to the Bureau, informing the systems architecture evolution, include: technological survey; critical design audit; evaluation of open source maturity; system modelling (including technical budgets); dependability analysis; risk analysis; cost modelling and security. The Bureau will embark on proof of concept prototyping necessary to qualify design choices and benchmark performances for relevant EO workflows. Approved outputs from these activities will be subject to inspection and comment from interested parties during routine checkpoints managed by theBureau.
