C40 is a network of nearly 100 of the world's leading cities, working to deliver urgent, transformative climate action now to confront the climate crisis and create a healthier, more equitable, and sustainable future for urban dwellers. C40 cities mayors are committed to a science-based, people-centered approach to limiting warming in line with the Paris Agreement and building healthy, equitable, and resilient communities. We work alongside a broad coalition of labor unions, businesses, the youth climate movement, and civil society to help mayors halve emissions by 2030 and phase out fossil fuels, while increasing climate resilience and urban equity. Project Summary, Objective, and Context Context In 2025, a working group of cities from Africa, Asia, and Latin America co-created, in collaboration with the C40 Food Systems Network, the C40 Thriving Food Systems Accelerator to identify key ways to advance food and nutrition security while building thriving food economies that generate quality green jobs within planetary boundaries. The Accelerator sets out four ambitious commitments to be achieved over the next decade. To ensure every resident has access to affordable, healthy, and sustainable food, improve livelihoods, and build a prosperous future for their city, mayors commit to taking action annually: BY 10 YEARS: 1. Provide a healthy and sustainable daily meal for every child: implement a universal school food program that aligns with a healthy diet and is contextually appropriate, while respecting planetary boundaries. 2. Create safer, cleaner, and more affordable markets: sustainably upgrade city market infrastructure to improve food security and minimize food loss and waste. 3. Boost local food businesses: foster quality green job creation and increase the availability of diverse and healthy foods produced sustainably by partnering with neighboring cities to develop programs to support farmers and small and medium-sized enterprises. WITHIN 2 YEARS: 4. Ensure a prosperous food future: jointly develop an integrated food system strategy that is reflected in the city's climate action plan and its disaster preparedness mechanisms. This project specifically aims to help cities meet the third commitment: "Boost local food businesses: foster quality green job creation and increase the availability of diverse and healthy foods produced sustainably by partnering with neighboring cities to develop programs to support farmers and small and medium-sized enterprises." There are approximately 570 million farmers globally, of whom 500 million are smallholders (95% of whom farm less than 2 ha), and most of them live near city and urban agglomeration markets.
