Research project - DZSF - Climate-resilient railway embankments: Modeling, assessment, and development of nature-based and technical measures to increase operational safety

Embankments are an important component of the railway system with diverse functions, such as supporting tracks or draining surface water. However, the inclined surfaces of embankments are also susceptible to various types of gravitational mass movements, especially with unfavorable embankment angles, poorly consolidated loose material, and weak root systems. Gravitational mass movements are often triggered by heavy rainfall, which is increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change. Landslide processes on embankments can have serious consequences for railway operations, as demonstrated by the train accident near Riedlingen. The aim of this research project is to increase the climate resilience of railway embankments by designing them to be less susceptible to gravitational mass movements. The project thus contributes to increasing the safety of railway operations. The research results will also help to advance the implementation of the goals of the German Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change. Specifically, the project contributes to achieving goal "I-2" in the action area "Transport and Transport Infrastructure": "Relevant reduction of damages and disruptions in road and rail transport caused by weather and climate-related influences such as floods, heavy rain, storms, droughts, heat, or gravitational mass movements."
