About Refugee Biriyani & Bananas (RBB) Refugee Biriyani & Bananas (RBB) is a female and community-led, grassroots organisation working alongside people affected by displacement, war, conflict, injustice and instability. Across Greece, Gaza and Cairo, we combine direct humanitarian support with advocacy and awareness-raising. We work to ensure that communities with lived experience are actively involved in decision-making and in the design and delivery of support. Since its beginnings in 2015, RBB has grown from a volunteer-led initiative into an established UK-registered charity with a committed and growing digital community. Our communications have played an important role in raising awareness, mobilising support and generating funding for our work. RBB currently has approximately 11,400 Instagram followers and 8,000 Facebook followers , alongside audiences across its other digital platforms. We want to sustain and build on this foundation by improving the consistency, reach, engagement and fundraising effectiveness of our digital communications. As a small organisation, communications and fundraising have largely been led by the Founder and CEO alongside substantial operational responsibilities. This has enabled agility, authenticity and strong connections with the communities and supporters involved in our work. As RBB continues to grow, we are now seeking to establish a more structured, sustainable and independently managed digital communications and fundraising function. We are seeking a Freelance Campaigns and Digital Communications Lead to take active, hands-on ownership of RBB’s digital communications and campaign delivery. The freelancer will be expected to create and publish consistent, high-quality content, actively manage agreed digital channels, deliver fundraising and awareness campaigns, and contribute to sustainable audience, supporter and income growth. Purpose of the Role The purpose of this role is to ensure a consistent, timely, creative and high-quality digital presence across RBB’s priority platforms. The role will help increase awareness of RBB’s work, grow and engage our online community, drive relevant website traffic, generate donations and build long-term supporter relationships that contribute to RBB’s sustainability and impact. This is a delivery-focused campaigns and digital communications role, combining strategic thinking with hands-on implementation. The successful freelancer will take active ownership of the planning, creation, editing, publication and monitoring of RBB’s digital content. They will deliver fundraising and awareness campaigns, manage agreed digital channels and communicate RBB’s programmes, priorities and impact clearly and effectively. Campaigns will sit at the heart of this role, using compelling digital communications to inspire action, whether through fundraising, advocacy, volunteering, partnership development or supporter engagement. Hands-on content creation, timely publication and campaign delivery are the primary priorities of this engagement. Strategic review and planning must directly support implementation and must not delay the regular production and publication of content. The freelancer will be expected to begin creating and publishing content from the outset while reviewing and refining the wider strategy alongside delivery. RBB is currently undertaking a Digital Communications and Fundraising Audit and developing its Digital Communications and Fundraising Strategy. Building on this work, the successful freelancer will be expected to familiarise themselves with, understand and actively implement the agreed strategy from the outset of the engagement. As the organisation grows and priorities evolve, the freelancer will make ongoing practical recommendations to refine and strengthen the strategy where appropriate. Any review or refinement should support implementation rather than replace it and should remain proportionate to RBB's size, capacity and emerging needs. The strategy will be delivered through consistent content production, digital campaigns, channel management, supporter engagement and performance analysis. It should operate as a live framework that guides day-to-day delivery rather than as a standalone written exercise. Communications and fundraising activity will be regularly reviewed and refined using platform analytics, audience insights, campaign performance and fundraising outcomes. The freelancer must be creative, organised, proactive and capable of working independently with limited supervision. They must not rely solely on receiving ready-made content from RBB. Where direct field photography, video or updates are unavailable, delayed, unsafe or inappropriate to share, the freelancer will be expected to identify and create suitable alternative content using RBB’s archives, reports, programme information, educational material, ethical stock assets, graphics, animations, explainers and other relevant formats. Working closely with the Founder and CEO and wider team, the freelancer will identify opportunities for continuous improvement and ensure RBB’s digital communications and fundraising evolve in response to organisational priorities, audience needs, emerging trends and good practice. All communications must reflect RBB’s commitment to dignity, safeguarding, ethical storytelling, lived experience and community-led leadership. The voices, rights and safety of the communities we work alongside must remain central to our communications. RBB’s Current Digital Landscape RBB currently uses the following digital platforms: Website (WordPress) – managed by a partner, with content provided by RBB Instagram Facebook TikTok LinkedIn Mailchimp (email marketing) RBB currently has an established online audience, including approximately 11,400 followers on Instagram, 8,000 followers on Facebook, and 1200 subscribers on Mailchimp . The successful freelancer will be expected to sustain and strengthen these existing audiences while developing appropriate growth, engagement and conversion objectives across prioritised channels. Due to limited dedicated communications capacity, activity across these platforms has not always been consistent or fully coordinated and has often been shaped by urgent campaigns and operational priorities. The Founder’s personal digital platforms have historically played a significant role in RBB’s reach, public engagement and fundraising momentum. This role will help determine how founder-led visibility can continue to support RBB while strengthening the reach, credibility and independence of RBB’s institutional channels. Delivery Priorities: The responsibilities below describe the overall scope of the engagement. Priorities and deliverables will be agreed and phased according to the available time and budget. Regular content creation, publication, channel management and active campaign delivery will remain the core ongoing priorities. Strategic development, partnership-building, systems improvement and longer-term initiatives must be proportionate and must support—not displace—day-to-day delivery. Key Responsibilities: 1. Strategy Implementation and Continuous Improvement Become familiar with RBB's existing Digital Communications and Fundraising Audit and Strategy, understanding its objectives, priorities and intended direction in order to implement it effectively. Analyse audience growth, engagement, website traffic, supporter behaviour and conversion pathways to understand how people move from awareness to engagement and financial support. Recommend and implement proportionate improvements to the Digital Communications and Fundraising Strategy where learning, organisational priorities or performance data indicate they would strengthen delivery. Ensure the strategy is proportionate to RBB’s size, capacity and resources and can be actively implemented within the engagement. Establish practical key performance indicators covering reach, meaningful engagement, audience growth, website activity, donor acquisition, recurring giving and supporter retention. Recommend which platforms should be prioritised, improved, consolidated or deprioritised. Translate the agreed strategy into a practical phased delivery plan with clear priorities, actions and timescales. Implement the strategy through active content production, campaign delivery and channel management from the outset of the engagement. Any strategic review or refinement should take place alongside delivery rather than as a separate preliminary exercise. 2. Content Creation & Channel Management 2.1 Content Production Independently plan, create, edit and publish high-quality, engaging digital content across RBB's digital platforms, tailoring content to the strengths, audiences and objectives of each platform. Begin producing and publishing content from the outset of the engagement, without waiting for completion of the wider audit or strategy. Produce an appropriate mix of digital content according to agreed priorities, which may include: Instagram posts, Stories, carousel graphics and Reels Facebook posts, Stories and campaigns TikTok videos LinkedIn posts and articles YouTube Shorts and longer-form videos where appropriate Website articles, blogs and landing pages (WordPress) Mailchimp newsletters and email campaigns Fundraising appeals and donation campaigns Educational and advocacy content Project updates and impact stories Infographics, visual impact summaries and campaign graphics Quote cards, motion graphics and simple animations Downloadable digital resources where appropriate Create engaging graphics and branded visual assets using Canva (or equivalent) and edit high-quality short-form videos and Reels using CapCut (or equivalent), ensuring content is optimised for each platform and reflects RBB's visual identity. Source, develop and produce content using a combination of: Original RBB field photography and videography Content supplied by RBB staff, volunteers, community members and partners Repurposed existing RBB content Archive photography and video Ethically sourced stock photography, video and audio Repurposed third-party content with appropriate permissions and attribution Graphics, illustrations, animations and motion design where appropriate The freelancer will be expected to identify, research and develop content ideas proactively establishing a content bank and must not depend on receiving complete captions, scripts, designs or field material from RBB. Repurpose long-form content into multiple high-quality digital assets, maximising the value and reach of existing content. For example, transforming a single interview, report, field visit or campaign into platform-specific graphics, videos, Reels, blogs, newsletters and social media posts. Ensure all content is accessible and optimised for each platform, including appropriate formatting, image and video dimensions, captions, subtitles, hashtags, alt text, calls to action and search optimisation where appropriate. 2.2 Channel Management Take active ownership of RBB's digital platforms, ensuring consistent, high-quality publishing across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Mailchimp, Linktree and the RBB website. Adapt content appropriately for each platform rather than simply duplicating posts, ensuring messaging, tone, format and calls to action are tailored to maximise reach, engagement and fundraising outcomes. Draft and deliver fundraising appeals, awareness campaigns, advocacy messaging and organisational communications aligned with RBB's Digital Communications Strategy and organisational priorities. Maintain a consistent publishing rhythm across all agreed digital channels, balancing reactive content with planned campaigns. Ensure all communications remain consistent with RBB's brand, values, tone of voice and dignity-centred approach to storytelling. Submit content requiring organisational approval with sufficient time for review and incorporate feedback promptly without unnecessarily delaying publication. Maintain a clear record of planned, drafted, approved, scheduled and published content. 2.3 Community Engagement Actively manage audience engagement across digital platforms by responding to comments, direct messages and enquiries where appropriate, fostering a positive, respectful and engaged online community. Build meaningful relationships with supporters, volunteers, partners, content creators and community members through authentic and timely engagement. Collaborate with field teams, community members, partners, grassroots organisations, influencers and advocacy platforms to co-create, amplify and share campaign content where appropriate. Encourage supporter participation through interactive content, community-led storytelling and opportunities for digital advocacy and fundraising. 2.4 Content Planning & Scheduling Develop and maintain a structured content calendar aligned with RBB's fundraising priorities, awareness campaigns, programme activities and key dates throughout the year. Plan content proactively while retaining the flexibility to respond quickly to humanitarian emergencies, advocacy opportunities and emerging organisational priorities. When direct field content is unavailable, delayed, unsafe or inappropriate to share due to operational, safeguarding or contextual considerations, independently develop creative and ethical alternative content. This may include explainers, educational content, archive-based storytelling, impact summaries, campaign narratives, values-led communications, supporter content, graphics, animations, relevant trends and other suitable formats. A lack of new field material should not, by itself, result in prolonged gaps in publication. Work closely with field teams and organisational leadership to gather timely, accurate and ethically produced content that reflects lived experiences with dignity, informed consent and safeguarding at its core. Monitor the performance of content across all digital platforms, using analytics and audience insights to continuously improve reach, engagement, supporter growth and fundraising performance. Stay up to date with emerging social media trends, platform updates, digital storytelling techniques, audience behaviour and best practice. Research successful campaigns, high-performing and viral content, and emerging content formats, identifying opportunities to adapt relevant ideas creatively and ethically for RBB while remaining aligned with the organisation's values, safeguarding principles and brand. 3. Fundraising Campaign Development Develop and deliver digital fundraising campaigns aligned with RBB’s fundraising strategy, April-to-March planning and financial year, and the Digital Communications and Fundraising Strategy reviewed, refined and implemented through this role. Design campaigns that guide supporters from awareness and engagement to one-off donations, recurring giving and sustained involvement. Lead structured strategies for urgent and seasonal appeals (including Ramadan, winter and rapid-response fundraising for Gaza, Greece, Cairo, and other areas of operation), ensuring culturally aware and context-sensitive messaging. Build evergreen fundraising pathways that strengthen recurring giving and sustained supporter engagement beyond crisis moments. Identify and optimise conversion pathways across platforms (social media, website, email) to increase engagement, donation completion rates, and supporter growth. Explore and implement crowdfunding, peer-to-peer, and community-led fundraising initiatives. Develop clear messaging that balances awareness-raising, advocacy, and financial mobilisation. Collaborate with field teams and leadership to ensure campaigns reflect operational realities and emerging needs. Lead end-to-end campaign delivery, from planning and content creation to launch and optimisation. 4. Strategic Partnerships & Public Engagement Develop and implement a content creator and partnership engagement plan aligned with RBB’s fundraising and advocacy goals. Build and nurture relationships with values-aligned content creators, artists, community and faith leaders, public figures, grassroots organisations, and advocacy platforms whose audiences align with RBB’s mission. Develop collaborations that expand reach, strengthen campaigns, and support both awareness-raising and fundraising, while centring dignity-led storytelling and community leadership. Balance founder-led visibility with strengthening RBB’s institutional platforms to maximise impact, income generation, and long-term independence. Establish proportionate short-term campaign partnerships and longer-term ambassador relationships that contribute to sustained awareness and financial support. 5. Donor Engagement & Retention Strengthen relationships with online supporters through personalised communication, targeted email campaigns, and timely updates. Develop and publish thank-you content and impact communications that demonstrate how donations are used. Implement strategies to grow recurring giving and encourage sustained supporter engagement. Work with RBB to ensure that supporter communications are accurate, appropriately segmented and compliant with applicable consent, privacy and marketing requirements. 6. Analytics & Optimisation Track and analyse the performance of digital communications and fundraising campaigns using relevant tools (e.g. Google Analytics, platform insights), and apply learning to improve reach, engagement, and conversion. Monitor trends in digital fundraising and communications, recommending and implementing proportionate improvements where appropriate. Prepare concise quarterly performance reports for RBB leadership and the Board of Trustees, presenting key results, learning, challenges and practical recommendations. Use performance insights to inform periodic reviews of the Digital Communications and Fundraising Strategy. 7. Crisis & Rapid Response Communications Rapid-response work will be undertaken within agreed working arrangements and availability. Any expectation of regular out-of-hours availability must be agreed separately in advance. Develop a clear, practical, and ethically grounded framework for rapid-response digital communications during urgent or evolving situations affecting communities RBB supports. Deliver timely, accurate, and sensitive communications in response to serious incidents, protection developments, conflict escalations, or high-visibility initiatives that may attract public or media attention. Ensure all communications prioritise dignity, informed consent, safeguarding, and the safety of community members and field teams. Advise on tone, positioning, and risk mitigation in politically sensitive or polarised contexts, supporting internal decision-making on when and how to communicate — including when restraint may be appropriate. Where appropriate, integrate awareness messaging, fundraising appeals, or calls to action aligned with RBB’s values and operational realities. Maintain organisational credibility, clarity, and ethical integrity during high-visibility or emotionally charged moments. 8. Brand Consistency & Advocacy Ensure all digital communications reflect RBB’s voice, mission, and values, with consistent messaging and visual identity across platforms. Strengthen RBB’s storytelling to raise awareness about people affected by displacement, war, injustice, and structural barriers, as well as critical gaps in support. Collaborate with community members to centre authentic voices and lived experience in campaigns. Ensure all content adheres to safeguarding, informed consent, and data protection principles, maintaining dignity-centred storytelling and avoiding extractive or sensationalist narratives. Monitor alignment across platforms to ensure consistency in messaging, tone, and brand assets. Exercise creativity and sound judgment when content is limited, maintaining integrity while ensuring continued engagement. Apply RBB’s ethical communications, safeguarding, consent and brand requirements in practice rather than treating them solely as written guidance. 9. Systems & Workflow Development Develop and implement streamlined internal communications workflows to improve efficiency, clarify roles, and reduce bottlenecks. Define a realistic and sustainable posting rhythm across prioritised platforms. Recommend and implement practical planning and scheduling tools where appropriate (e.g. shared planning boards, task management systems, content scheduling platforms) to support coordination and consistency. Develop and actively use simple templates and processes that improve delivery, reduce bottlenecks and support timely publication. Systems and documentation must remain proportionate and should not become substitutes for content creation and campaign delivery. Where agreed and where capacity permits, support the recruitment and light-touch coordination of communications volunteers or contributors, ensuring clear responsibilities and appropriate quality control. Explore proportionate opportunities to strengthen digital reach (e.g. basic paid advertising, platform optimisation, or supporter-led amplification), where aligned with budget and strategy. Embed systems collaboratively during the contract period to ensure continuity and sustainability beyond the engagement, keeping processes proportionate to RBB’s size and capacity. Priorities and deliverables within this scope will be agreed and phased with RBB leadership to ensure that they remain proportionate to the available time, budget and organisational capacity. Regular content creation, publication, channel management and campaign delivery will remain the central priorities throughout the engagement.
