Futures study: What is the next frontier for cleanenergy technologies? What does this mean for CIF?
Background
Since its establishment in2008, the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) has played a catalytic role inadvancing clean energy technologies. Rapid technological innovation, evolvingfinancing models, and shifting geopolitical dynamics now require CIF toanticipate the next frontier of the clean energy, technology and infrastructurethat will underpin an economic future driven by intensive electrification.
Positioned within CIF’sStrategic Directions is a mandate to support the scaling of finance and thedeployment of advanced technologies that enable energy system transformation. Thisstudy will present a written assessment of the frontiers in advanced cleantechnologies needed to scale clean energy solutions in response to acceleratingelectrification demand driven by the digitalization of the global economy. Thestudy will, in consultation with MDBs and relevant stakeholders, identifystrategic opportunities for the Climate Investment Funds to continue leading theacceleration of technology and innovation to remain at the forefront of theenergy transition

Identify emerging/ future energy relatedtechnologies, and related geopolitical considerations

Assess the next frontiers for advanced cleanenergy technologies [e.g. advanced geothermal, nuclear, storage, smart grids,…] with a particular emphasis on the implications of the digitization of theglobal economy

Consider the geopolitical factors (e.g. globaland national interests) that may shape both supply and demand of advanced cleantechnologies and financing?

Position these considerations within CIF’sStrategic Directions mandate and make recommendations to inform CIF’s supportfor frontier advanced clean energy solutions

Consultant selectioncriteria
The consulting firm should have extensive experience in designingand delivering futures oriented strategic studies in the context of energy technologiesand climate finance. Theconsulting firm shall appoint a team leader for the evaluation. The team leaderwill be accountable for all major deliverables as well as project processes andcommunications. They should have extensive experience (minimum 15 years) withrelated work and proven experience with supervising data collection, analysis,report writing, and stakeholder engagement. They must have excellent research,writing, analytical, and presentation skills.
They should have a sufficient number of days allocated to the projectto make a substantive contribution to the work and not just provide overalldirection.
