Major Projects in Cable/Pipe Trenching for Mainova AG

Context: The energy transition in Germany is leading to major changes in energy supply in Frankfurt. In addition to the city of Frankfurt's goal of being CO2-neutral by 2040, there is a significant need for action regarding the infrastructure of supply networks. New power lines must be built to supply new areas and connected to existing networks; existing infrastructure, including substations and networks, must be renewed and adapted as necessary. In addition, the district heating pipeline network in the city must be massively expanded to meet growing demand. The drinking water and gas pipeline networks also need to be adapted in terms of capacity and reliability. Added to this is enormous urban growth for new housing, industry, and services; Frankfurt, with its data centers, is the largest internet hub in Europe, and Frankfurt Airport is being expanded with a new terminal, etc. For these reasons, Mainova AG and NRM are continuously increasing their demand for civil engineering services from well-qualified construction companies. Needs and Scope: The negotiated procedure following the qualification process covers all necessary services for NRM Netzdienste Rhein-Main GmbH and Mainova AG for projects in pipeline construction in the sectors of - Electricity (low voltage, medium voltage, high voltage). - Heat - Gas (low pressure, medium pressure, high pressure) - Drinking water The aforementioned negotiated procedure covers the most frequently required services for projects in cable/pipe trenching, including surface excavation, surface restoration, and pipe laying work for the execution of pipeline construction in the respective sectors. To cover the demand for new pipelines in all sectors and renewals, as well as directly adjacent infrastructure such as the renewal and new construction of substations, approximately 90 km of civil engineering services are required annually in Frankfurt. As of spring 2024, in addition to existing needs, additional civil engineering services for - Expansion of the 110 kV electricity grid - Renewal of the 0.4 – 30 kV electricity grid - Expansion of the heat network - Renewal of drinking water networks have been identified or are already in the planning stage, with a cumulative order of magnitude of several hundred million euros for the next eight years. This also includes construction measures for the renewal or new construction of substations. As of today, Mainova expects a possible additional demand for civil engineering services for the next eight years of up to EUR 1.0 billion.
