Description
The National Lottery Heritage Fund have funded a collaborative project between fifteen archive services across England and Wales, led by the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre (WSHC), to work with records of World War One Military Appeal Tribunals which were held in response those appealing for exemption from conscription under the Military Service Act 1916 which made every male British subject aged 18-41 liable to be called for military service (prior to this men would voluntarily attest their willingness to serve). The project “Grounds for Appeal: First World War Military Service Appeal Tribunals in Great Britain” will create a national database for key data extracted from applications made to the Tribunals for exemption from military service including names, ages, occupation, employer, grounds under which the appeal was made, and the decision of the Tribunal. A Project Lead is required to be contracted for 104 days, over a 24 month period. The role of Project Officer will have responsibility for managing delivery of the project outputs and will work closely with the WSHC project lead and the Historical Consultant.
