Purchase of SmartLab XE

DTU Energi is seeking to procure a Rigaku SmartLab XE instrument, manufactured by Rigaku Holdings Corporation and supplied through Ramcon A/S. This advanced multipurpose diffractometer features a 9.0 kW molybdenum (Mo) rotating anode with high brightness (> 2.8 kW/mm²) and a HyPix-3000HE hybrid photon-counting 2D detector with 100 × 100 μm² pixels and an active area of 2900 mm². This combination allows for measurements with very low noise and high precision, even in demanding experiments. The instrument includes automatic goniometer alignment and automatic recognition of optics and sample holders, ensuring perfect positioning and minimizing the need for manual adjustments. It is equipped with a high-resolution vertical theta-theta goniometer with a horizontal sample holder and optical encoders, optimized for a goniometer radius of 300 mm, providing high geometric stability for TS/PDF measurements and other diffraction methods. The sample holder can be automatically adjusted in the Z-direction (11–12 mm movement range) in all configurations, ensuring correct sample placement without manual adjustment. Additionally, the system comes with capillary optics that can be adjusted and used without the need for a microscope or telescope, which is particularly advantageous for flow measurements on liquids. The SmartLab XE allows for extremely rapid data collection of X-ray diffraction data up to 17.2 Å⁻¹, with internal benchmarks indicating that TS/PDF measurements on nanomaterials in liquids can be completed in approximately 15 minutes with the necessary data quality for structural analysis. The instrument is supplied with a complete software API, enabling direct integration into DTU's own experimental software for real-time data collection, processing, and feedback control. The system can be connected to capillary tubes from a synthesis robot, allowing it to be incorporated directly into autonomous experimental sequences. The instrument comes with a 1-year warranty, a 5-year warranty on the detector, and a 3-year or 10,000-hour warranty on the anodes.
