Delivery of a DAS system for seismic monitoring using fiber optic technology, including installation, integration, commissioning, maintenance, and training

The aim is the procurement and operational installation of a high-performance Distributed Acoustic Sensing system, including all components necessary for commissioning, i.e., interrogator and measurement computer. The system must be capable of detecting seismic waves as strain changes over existing fiber optic cables using laser measurements of Rayleigh scatter effects and integrating this data into the existing monitoring network of the earthquake service. The interrogator should be usable for real-time seismic monitoring utilizing existing fiber optic infrastructure. The goal is to improve seismological monitoring in Germany by integrating modern fiber optic technologies (Distributed Acoustic Sensing, DAS) into the existing earthquake measurement network. The aim is to increase the spatial resolution and real-time detection of seismic events, especially in critical infrastructure (Kritis) regions. DAS as a technological replacement for conventional seismometers and especially strong-motion sensors is to be tested. The device will be permanently deployed at the German nuclear weapons test stop station GERESS after a trial phase at various locations, such as for testing usability for KRITIS monitoring and in the Upper Rhine Graben for testing applicability for monitoring induced earthquakes.
