Description

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an important greenhouse gas that also contributes to stratospheric ozone depletion. This study aims at characterising the needs for space-based observations of atmospheric N2O, starting from a user and science perspective. Knowledge gaps are identified related to the N2O production and life cycle, its impact on stratospheric ozone, and its role in the Earth's radiation balance that can be addressed with the help of satellite observations, with a focus on information that can be provided from satellite observations. The study explores the space of requirements that satellite observations of atmospheric N2O (Level-2) and measurements of radiances at the top of the atmosphere (Level-1) would have to meet in order to contribute to addressing these knowledge gaps.
