New construction of the Panda enclosure in the Hellabrunn Zoo Munich - structural engineering according to §51 HOAI 2021

The Hellabrunn Zoo Munich is located south of the city center in the Thalkirchen district and is embedded in the protected landscape area of the eastern Isar floodplains, with the Isar forming the western boundary of the park. The zoo is characterized by its natural design and its central location within the city. The new panda enclosure includes both indoor and outdoor enclosures, visitor areas, as well as non-public areas for animal care, and covers an area of approximately 5,000 m². The most important components include the indoor and outdoor enclosures, extensive bamboo areas, water features, various retreat options for the animals, and special information and educational zones for visitors. The entire design is based on the natural habitats of pandas, with the existing trees being integrated as much as possible. The panda house itself is planned as a reinforced concrete structure with solid walls and features a spacious, floor-to-ceiling glass facade facing the visitor area. A free-form green roof floats on reinforced concrete supports above the building, which has a total floor area of approximately 800 m² GFA. In addition, the panda house is surrounded by naturalistic habitat areas, climbing structures, and various resting areas for the animals, covering approximately 2,070 m² and creating a diverse environment for the animal inhabitants. The project volume is approximately 15.8 million gross. The building permit application is to be submitted in 08/2026 based on the preliminary planning.
