Reconceptualization of the Marienfelde Emergency Reception Camp Memorial: Planning and design of the new permanent exhibition with reception and mediation landscape

The Foundation Berlin Wall (Stiftung Berliner Mauer - SBM) is seeking proposals for the comprehensive reconception and design of the Marienfelde Reception Camp Memorial (Erinnerungsstätte Notaufnahmelager Marienfelde - ENM). This project aims to develop and design a new, inclusive permanent exhibition, a reception area, and a multifunctional, inclusive educational landscape. The Marienfelde Reception Camp was a crucial point of arrival in West Berlin for approximately 1.4 million East German refugees and emigrants between 1953 and 1990. Following reunification, it continued to serve as an arrival point for ethnic Germans from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Today, the preserved historical buildings function as transitional housing for refugees and asylum seekers globally. The ENM holds significant potential as a historical and educational site for contemporary engagement with the past, but its current permanent exhibition, opened in 2005, is outdated in terms of content, media, and overall presentation. Furthermore, the existing seminar and event spaces are no longer adequate in size or equipment for current educational needs.

The scope of work includes:
1. Conception, design, and implementation of the new permanent exhibition covering 499.2 sqm.
2. Conception and object planning for the interior design of the reception area, spanning 75.6 sqm.
3. Conception and object planning for the interior design of the educational landscape, covering 246.5 sqm.

The procurement process seeks a qualified office or consortium to undertake these planning tasks, revitalizing the memorial site to better serve its educational mission and reflect its historical significance.
