Published through ESA - European Space Agency, a multilateral development bank that follows standardized international procurement guidelines. Projects funded by multilateral institutions are generally open to international bidders from eligible member countries for services in the information and communication technology sector. Service contracts are typically evaluated on both technical quality and price, and may require bidders to demonstrate relevant experience and qualified personnel. This is an advance notice — the formal tender is expected to be published shortly. Interested parties can use this time to prepare documentation and identify potential partners.

Description

Objective: To develop a breadboard demonstrating single-step waste inhibition and compaction and characterize cross-linked biodegradable materials compatible for this process.Description: Re-supply and waste management are critical components of crewed space exploration. The current waste management approach exposes the crew to (bio)safety risks during the temporary storage period and is unpractical in longer space missions. Generic waste compaction/inhibition technologies of mixed waste materials in space have been generally studied. However, despite promising results on the volume reduction performance, the physical characteristics of the product obtained allow for limited transformation of re-usable resources. To address this, the activity aims to develop a breadboard demonstrating single-step waste inhibition and compaction and characterize cross-linked biodegradable materials compatible for this process. Lastly, there is a benefit in defining new packaging materials, which are biodegradable in the conditions of identified recycling systems and withstand the proposed compaction and inhibition process. The activity includes the following tasks: - Review single-step waste inhibition/compaction methods compatible with resource recovery (e.g. water) and developed biodegradable materials - Trade-off and selection of integrated waste inhibition and compaction processes and compliant packaging/padding materials. - Design and assembly of a breadboard system for single-step waste inhibition and compaction - Test to validate selected single-step waste inhibition and compaction technological modifications and biodegradability of treated packaging material - Developed cross-linking agents to enhance the barrier properties of biodegradable packaging materials, while maintaining biodegradability and process compatibility - Test to validate biodegradability and intended use of developed packaging. - Define a roadmap for technology maturation for integration into an operational system.Deliverables: Breadboard, Report
