Description
Objective: The objective of the activity is to demonstrate the provision of delay-tolerant broadband services specified for autonomous driving over satellite constellations in an integrated. Terrestrial-Network/Non-Terrestrial-Network (TN/NTN) environment.Targeted Improvements: Enabling the following features in a satellite-based TN/NTN environment:1) End-to-end secure mobile IP connectivity of autonomous driving server/clients through satellite constellations.2) Specification of 5G QoS Identifier (5QI) for autonomous driving and recommendation to 3GPP relevant working groups.3) Seamless integration of autonomous driving Application Server/Clientsin TN/NTN environment.Description: Autonomous Driving is enjoying a surge among customers with appetite for leaving the driving totechnology, leading the automakers to boost autonomous driving and paving the way for self-driving vehicles to be available and affordable for individuals. Autonomous driving encompasses multidisciplinary technologies such as artificial intelligence, sensor processing, navigation and communications. As a mission critical service, autonomous driving is subject to communication services to be available anytime, everywhere, even in areas with limited terrestrial coverage, thus integration of satellite communications is compulsory for an un-interrupted provision of autonomous driving services while the target vehicle is on the road in sub-urban areas withnoterrestrial radio infrastructure. 3GPP Rel. 18 provides a mature starting point for specifying those Vehicle-to-everything (V2X)requirements addressing the NTNcommunication payload, acting either as a fully integrated or non-3GPP access network. A subset of autonomous driving use cases concerns end-to-end connectivity between autonomous driving application server and a large number of vehicles arranged in multicast groups (e.g., autonomous vehicle disengagement and accident/collision reports).Secure multicast mobility management across satellite communication requires robust and efficient routing and forwarding mechanisms. The activity shall apply multicast mobile communication by utilizing existing standard RFC and 3GPP protocols extended with routing and forwarding through NTN constellations, providing a seamless network handover between TN and NTN. The activity shall assess the performance of the autonomous driving services for at least two satellite communication service providers for GEO and LEO satellites.Furthermore, the activity shall verify the impact of popular beam hopping and related resources allocation on autonomous driving services, e.g., with respect to resulting varying delay. To tackle the main challenges, this activity is required to:1) Define the system/deployment architectures for autonomous driving in a satellite-based 5G/6G TN/NTN environment.2) Specify the technical and operational requirements, particularly addressing the NTN communication payload.3) Capture the appropriate Use Cases and operational scenarios, e.g., mobile multicast delivery of SW/Firmware update for a f leet of Vehicles.4) Develop a NTN payload demonstrator on a representative hardware (e.g., radiation-tolerant FPGA).5) Develop an end-to-end network demonstrator testbed that follows the operational scenarios, verifying the performances for various autonomous driving use cases with different service requirements in an integrated TN/NTN environment.6) Execute field trials utilizing real time satellite links over constellations integrated with 3GPP 5G NR waveform and corenetwork connecting COTS autonomous driving application server/clients.7) Provide recommendation to 3GPP relevant working groups.
