The tram network, including tracks and stops, will be fundamentally renovated to ensure operation for another 30 years and to increase the quality of stay and attractiveness. This is usually based on a prior assessment of the structural condition of the track and stop facilities and their expected remaining service life. During the fundamental renovation, the technical facilities necessary for operation will be brought up to the current state of the art, and damage and its structural causes will be eliminated to ensure the operational safety of the tram. As part of the fundamental renovation, the following services, among others, are to be provided: • Fundamental refurbishment of track facilities • Renewal of stops • Renewal of switch control piping • Renewal of drainage • Greening of tracks and adjacent areas • Reconstruction or adaptation of existing traffic facilities such as roadways and sidewalks Due to legal regulations (§ 8 para. 3 Persons Transport Act (PBefG) and § 31 para. 1 Berlin Mobility Act (MobG) as well as the Berlin Public Transport Plan (NVP)), public transport must be made barrier-free, in particular, stops and access routes must be made barrier-free and safe. Currently, around 230 direction stops in the Berlin tram network are still not barrier-free and need to be replanned and redesigned accordingly. Barrier-free expansion always includes components for the fundamental renovation of the track and switch facilities there, which are brought up to the current state of the art for operation and where damage and its structural causes are eliminated to ensure the operational safety of the tram. As part of the barrier-free expansion and fundamental renovation, the following services, in particular, are to be provided, which will be awarded by BVG: • Regulation of the platform edge to compensate for the height difference between the tram platform and the tram • Installation of ramps at stops to facilitate access for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility • Implementation of tactile guidance systems (e.g., floor indicators) and acoustic signal devices at stops • Renovation of footpaths and adaptation of access routes to stops and trams
