Description
The Coordinating Entity is conducting research to gain a greater understanding of the current market and service offerings for a central population-based cancer registry software solution. The Manitoba Cancer Registry (MCR) at CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB) is legally mandated under the Public Health Act to collect, classify and maintain data on all cancer cases diagnosed in Manitoba. The MCR participates in the collection, abstraction, classification, utilization, and analysis of complex medical data. This central population-based registry collects all cancer incidence and mortality for the province of Manitoba. The MCR processes approximately 15 000+ cases annually. The Manitoba Cancer Registry incorporates data collected from reports including histology, cytology, bone marrow, flow cytometry, and diagnostic imaging.CCMB is working towards ensuring timelier registration of cancer cases within the MCR. The desired solution will include modern cancer registry system software that supports existing Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology to automate pathology report review, enable logic-based rules that enforce data collection rules/standards outlined by certifying agencies, and Manitoba-specific data transfers/flow. The second objective of this work is for the timelier staging of cancer within the Manitoba Cancer Registry. The focus on NLP for diagnosis has the potential to facilitate the capture of key staging elements.
