Description
The objective of this activity is to qualify a set of extensions to be added to the RTEMS SMP QDP (Real-Time Executive for Multiprocessor Systems Symmetric multiprocessing Qualification Data Package) targeting a broader set of missions, including safety critical ones.Description: A particular version of the RTEMS operating system has been pre-qualified in the frame of a previous GSTP activity, G617-254SW - Qualification of RTEMS Symmetric multiprocessing (SMP). The result is a prequalification toolkit allowing end-users to qualify their space applications on space-qualified hardware. The activity focused on qualifying the SMP elements of the RTEMS super core with a limited subset of managers and APIs (Application Programming Interface). The activity resulted in a qualification data package made publicly available. The current qualification perimeter is constraining the use of the operating system and does not make it attractive for the development of modern applications (e.g. AI, data processing applications, etc.) or their easy porting from ground to Space environment. To support these applications, the proposed activity aims at adding new services and APIs (e.g.OpenMP), new target processors and new drivers (e.g. SpaceWire and CAN). In addition, the qualification toolchain will be improved to support processor optimisations, options to provide a better observability of the applications and potentially support new languages (e.g. C++). Raising the criticality category to level A (software involved in safety of life) of the services and API involved in safety critical operations shall be considered. The tasks foreseen in the frame of this activity are the following: Identification of the qualification extensions and toolchain updates required to support the largest number of applications. This shall rely on a survey involving RTEMS users (large scale integrators, principal investigators, equipment provider,etc.). Selection of the extensions of the RTEMS SMP qualification data package covering both the operating system and the toolchain. Analysis of the code and documentation of the new qualification perimeter, and adoption of changes as needed. Generation of the artefacts, code and documentation needed to achieve the pre-qualification objective to be included in the qualification data package.
