Description

This activity will advance physics-based modelling of the solar corona, solar wind, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and solar energetic particle (SEP) events to improve the prediction of space weather from the Sun to Earth. Using state-of-the-art photospheric magnetic-field observations and in-situ solar-wind measurements as constraints, the activity will enhance the realism and predictive capability of numerical simulations through improved modelling of solar-atmosphere dynamics, solar-wind formation, CME initiation and propagation, and SEP acceleration and transport. The activity will model particle acceleration and release in the lower and middle corona, including flare-associated SEP events and acceleration at CME-driven shocks, together with propagation through evolving coronal and heliospheric magnetic fields. As the first step towards a long-term objective of end-to-end space weather forecasting, the activity will deliver validated software, models, documentation, and demonstrators that significantly strengthen the capability to model and forecast solar drivers of space weather within a common physics-based framework.
