ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW
Assignment Title: Sri Lanka: Business Development & Waste Management Needs Assessment of MSMEs in Nature-Based Tourism
Assignment Countries:
Sri Lanka
ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION
Sri Lanka's rich natural assets make it a promising nature-based tourism (NBT) destination, but the sector remains underdeveloped with limited benefits reaching local communities. Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are a critical but underserved part of the value chain that faces technical, managerial, financial, and environmental constraints. Enabling MSMEs to participate in NBT is seen as essential for attracting private investment, increasing local value capture, and boosting destination appeal.

This assignment aims to provide a focused, evidence-based diagnostic of the capacities and skills, business development, and waste management needs of MSMEs in Sri Lanka's NBT sector, and to translate findings into actionable recommendations to inform the design of investments and capacity building initiatives to support MSME integration into NBT value chains.
The firm will: (1) map the existing landscape of NBT MSMEs including the identification of aggregators, (2) assess business development constraints, (3) assess waste management needs and identify opportunities to improve sustainable practices among NBT MSMEs and (4) develop recommendations for investments and capacity building to support MSME inclusion in NBT value chains.
