Two-phase Realization Competition with Idea Section "Erlebnisraum Rheinaue Dormagen" - Open Space Planning

The "Erlebnisraum Rheinaue Dormagen" (Dormagen Rhine Meadow Experience Space) project is a central project in the context of Dormagen's urban development for the main town. The Integrated Urban Development Concept (ISEK) with a master plan describes measures to enhance the city center and improve its connection to the Rhine. Southeast of the city center and within walking distance, there are valuable open spaces on the Rhine bank and on a hill. The hill is clearly visible from the Rhine and offers a view of the surrounding area. Foot and cycle paths along the dike connect to the medieval customs fortress Zons and to the ferry connections to Monheim and further north to Düsseldorf-Urdenbach. To the southwest, the Cologne urban area adjoins, which is initially characterized by the Chempark along the Rhine at a distance of approximately 700m. The aim is to develop an experience space that captures the characteristics of the place and translates them into a strong landscape architectural idea. The newly designed open space should combine quality of stay, movement, play, experiencing nature, views, ecological enhancement, and improved accessibility to the Rhine area. The site should not be uniformly redesigned; rather, a differentiated interplay of intensively usable areas, quiet nature experience zones, and inaccessible habitat areas should be strived for. In order to achieve the broadest possible range of solutions and an optimal planning result, the City of Dormagen is launching a two-phase open space planning realization competition with an idea section. This forms the foundation for further open space planning, from the execution planning to the structural implementation of the sub-measure.
