Ammatillisella perhekodilla tarkoitetaan sijaishuollon yksikköä, jossa sijoitettujen lasten kanssa tosiasiallisesti asuu perhekotivanhempi tai perhekotivanhemmat ja jolla on voimassa oleva aluehallintoviraston myöntämä lupa antaa lastensuojelun ympärivuorokautista ammatillista perhehoitoa. Luvanvaraista perhehoitoa tarjotaan yksityisistä sosiaalipalveluista annetun lain 7 §:ssä tarkoitetun luvan perusteella (Perhehoitolaki 263/2015, 4 § ja laki perhehoitolain muuttamisesta 510/2016). Tässä hankinnassa perhekotitoiminta tarkoittaa myös luvanvaraisen perhehoidon luvan mukaisesti toimivaa SOS -lapsikylä-toimintaa.
