Description

From 2019 to 2026, the VRU invested in developing a youth sector practitioners’ leadership and development programme called Rise Up. This programme supported youth practitioners across London who work with young people and communities affected by violence. Its design was informed by extensive discussions and consultation with community led organisations, including youth practitioners, VCS organisations, and young people.
Rise Up recognised that although many frontline youth practitioners bring significant lived experience and strong commitment to their roles, their work is not always fully recognised or valued. This lack of recognition can limit opportunities for practitioners to engage strategically or progress into more senior roles within their organisations or elsewhere.
Building on the successes of earlier iterations and listening carefully to feedback from youth practitioners, senior leaders, and young people, we have developed a clearer understanding of what additional support practitioners need to deliver effectively and better support young people impacted by violence.
This programme aims to provide high quality, specialist and tailored training and support that helps youth practitioners build on their expertise in supporting young people, while also strengthening their leadership skills and career development.
It will combine practical and specialist training relevant to frontline professionals working with young people affected by violence, alongside business management skills and individualised coaching to ensure participants receive personalised leadership support.
The programme will be delivered through three packages, reflecting different practitioner needs, capacities and audiences.
Package 1 will offer flexible, standalone training and networking sessions delivered throughout the contract. This directly responds to sector feedback highlighting the need for accessible, responsive and varied training opportunities, especially for new practitioners, part time staff and freelancers.
Package 2 will provide an intensive, cohort-based leadership development programme aimed at practitioners progressing into senior or strategic roles.
Package 3 will coordinate and co-chair the VRU’s Youth Practitioners’ Advisory Board. This board provides an opportunity for a limited number of programme participants to be actively involved in developing strategic leadership skills to inform the work of the VRU.
