About IUCN
IUCN is a membership Union uniquely composed of both government and civil society organisations. It
provides public, private and non-governmental organisations with the knowledge and tools that enable
human progress, economic development and nature conservation to take place together.
Created in 1948, IUCN is now the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network, harnessing
the knowledge, resources and reach of more than 1,400 Member organisations and around 15,000
experts. It is a leading provider of conservation data, assessments and analysis. Its broad membership
enables IUCN to fill the role of incubator and trusted repository of best practices, tools and international
standards.
IUCN provides a neutral space in which diverse stakeholders including governments, NGOs, scientists,
businesses, local communities, indigenous peoples’ organisations and others can work together to forge
and implement solutions to environmental challenges and achieve sustainable development.
Working with many partners and supporters, IUCN implements a large and diverse portfolio of
conservation projects worldwide. Combining the latest science with the traditional knowledge of local
communities, these projects work to reverse habitat loss, restore ecosystems and improve people’s
well-being.

About the Project
Pamoja Tuhifadhi Bahari Yetu (BY) Project is a four-year initiative (2024–2028) implemented by IUCN,
TNC, WCS, WWF, FORUMCC, and government counterparts in Mainland Tanzania (through the Ministry
of Livestock and Fisheries-MLF) and Zanzibar (through the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries-
MOBEF). The project aims to:
➢ Improve environmental protection and biodiversity conservation of coastal and marine
ecosystems.
➢ Strengthen community-led coastal forest resource management.
➢ Reduce plastic pollution in rivers, estuaries, and the marine environment; and
➢ Enhance institutional and research capacity for coastal and marine resource management.
The project is structured around five work packages (WP), each of which is implemented by a distinct
partner, and, when necessary, by two partners, to achieve the outcomes. The WP are in the following
areas: the protection of marine resources and biodiversity, the strengthening of community-led

management of coastal forests, the prevention of plastic litter in marine and estuary water bodies, the
enhancement of institutional capacities for the research, monitoring, surveillance, and management of
coastal and marine resources, and the last project management, coordination, and acceleration of
impact.
Under Work Package 2: Strengthen Community-led Management of Coastal Forests, the project aims to
fully operationalize community based forest management in the prioritized coastal forest landscapes by
providing comprehensive support in restoration, village land use planning including establishment of
village land forest reserves, support community-based forest governance through strengthening natural
resources governance and the creation of a community forest governance monitoring dashboards and
promote sustainable green economy enterprises through the identification, strengthening and incubation
of community-based organizations engaged in forest value chains. As part of this intervention, the project
will support selected Green Economy Incubation (GEI) groups through a comprehensive package of
assistance, including technical capacity-building, enterprise development support, access to appropriate
technologies and structured incubation services to enhance productivity, value addition and market
competitiveness.
To facilitate value addition within the beekeeping value chain, the project intends to procure and distribute
beekeeping tools and equipment to selected GEI groups, comprising two (2) groups in Zanzibar and two
(2) groups in Rufiji District. The equipment will enable beneficiary groups to undertake efficient honey
harvesting, processing, value addition, packaging and storage, thereby improving the quality and
competitiveness of bee products, increasing household incomes and minimizing post-harvest losses.
