Background The municipality of Ittigen planned the development of the central area "Zentrum Rain", which had existed since the 1970s and was originally designed for 20,000 inhabitants. A master plan from 2013 focused on improving the outdoor spaces, with some measures already implemented. In 2020, a new kindergarten was built, and the municipal council decided to create a meeting zone instead of a parking lot. The renovation of the triple sports hall and the multi-purpose building was rejected due to its poor condition in favor of a new construction. A holistic master plan "Rain" was then created to ensure optimal long-term use of the area. For this purpose, a one-stage project competition was held for the new construction of sports and leisure facilities, which called for innovative, sustainable concepts. The winning project by LEISMANN AG now serves as the basis for further planning and implementation. Objective The facility in Ittigen is located on a terraced high plateau and is characterized by loosely distributed solitary buildings and a fragmented avenue. To strengthen the main square, a two-story building was integrated as a new central point, built into the existing triple gymnasium. An arcade on the west side marks the entrance to the new center and creates an inviting atmosphere. The buildings were arranged in such a way that the permeability of the campus is maintained and connections between the sports fields and the central square are promoted. The facade design reflects the concept of stacking and joining, with exposed concrete columns and wooden facade elements. Alternating window shapes enliven the facades and loosen the architectural expression. The surroundings were enhanced by rows of trees and new pedestrian connections to establish the Rain square as a central meeting place. Sustainability was emphasized by preserving and selectively loosening the concrete paving and creating new green spaces. The newly designed square offers space for various uses while remaining flexible enough to be used as a parking lot temporarily.
