About the Project
General Summary: this joint initiative by the International Union for Conservation of Nature
(IUCN) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) aims to promote
inclusive and large-scale Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) in critical ecosystems across
Africa and South America. It focuses on integrating knowledge, equality, and action by
encouraging equitable governance, strengthening technical capacities, and mobilizing
investments to support effective large-scale restoration. Building on the foundations of the
global Forest Landscape Restoration Hub (FLR Hub)—an initiative funded by the German
government through the International Climate Initiative (IKI)—this project represents a
targeted expansion of the Hub’s existing efforts. SDC’s support adds value by enhancing the
implementation of restoration in select African landscapes and promoting regional
collaboration and knowledge exchange in South America. The initiative combines direct, on-
the-ground restoration in Madagascar and Mozambique with the establishment of a demand-
driven, regional knowledge management platform to support FLR coordination, learning, and
innovation at the regional level across South America. It addresses urgent environmental and
social challenges—including land degradation, biodiversity loss, and climate vulnerability—by
empowering local communities, promoting gender-responsive governance, and strengthening
the systems for knowledge generation, sharing, and application. With a planned duration of 4
years (November 2025–October 2029) and a total volume of CHF 5,5 million (including
scoping activities), SDC’s strategic investment plays a catalytic role in translating political
commitment into action, operationalizing national restoration strategies, and scaling south-
south cooperation in forest landscape restoration.
Strategic Objectives: The project is anchored in five core pillars: 1. Knowledge and
Awareness Raising: Strengthening the global and regional knowledge base on FLR, fostering
co-creation, and amplifying local and Indigenous knowledge alongside scientific data. 2. Site-
Level Planning and Implementation: Supporting countries and communities in assessing,
planning, and implementing FLR interventions in priority landscapes. 3. Scaling and Regional
Engagement: Enhancing regional synergies and learning, enabling cross-border collaboration,
and supporting policy alignment. 4. Livelihoods and Socioeconomic Co-Benefits: Promoting
inclusive value chains, sustainable finance models, and FLR as a pathway to local
development and poverty reduction. 5. Gender Equality and Social Inclusion: Embedding
gender equality and inclusive governance as central pillars in all FLR processes, ensuring
representation, agency, and empowerment.
