About IUCN
IUCN s a membership Union uniquely composed of both government and civil society
organisations. It provides public, private and non-governmental organisations with the
knowledge and tools that enable human progress, economic development and nature
conservation to take place together.Created in 1948, IUCN is now the world's largest and most
diverse environmental network, harnessing the knowledge, resources and reach of more than
1,400 Member organisations and some 15,000 experts. It is a leading provider of conservation
data, assessments and analysis. Its broad membership enables IUCN to fill the role of
incubator and trusted repository of best practices, tools and international standards.
IUCN provides a neutral space in which diverse stakeholders including governments, NGOs,
scientists, businesses, local communities, indigenous peoples' organisations and others can
work together to forge and implement solutions to environmental challenges and achieve
sustainable development.
Working with many partners and supporters, IUCN implements a large and diverse portfolio
of conservation projects worldwide. Combining the latest science with the traditional
knowledge of local communities, these projects work to reverse habitat loss, restore
ecosystems and improve people's well-being.

About the Project
The SUSTAIN Pro project – Sustainability and Inclusion for Growth Corridors – aims to
contribute to the transformation of agricultural production systems by promoting sustainable
food systems and integrating Nature-based Solutions (NbS), with the goal of improving
productivity, strengthening farmers' resilience to climate change, reducing losses and
promoting environmentally sustainable production practices.
Composting is one of the main NbS promoted by the project in the districts of Vanduzi and
Báruè. Farmers turn crop residues (cabbage and green bean leftovers, maize straw and
stalks, soybean and pigeon pea), animal manure and other available organic materials into
organic compost. This compost improves soil fertility and structure, increases water retention,
reduces dependence on chemical fertilisers and adds value to residues that would otherwise
be burned or wasted.
Some of the supported farmers and groups already produce compost in quantities exceeding
their own needs, or have the capacity to do so. Marketing this surplus makes it possible to add
value to agricultural residues and create a new source of income: organic compost is a

circular-economy product with potential demand among vegetable growers, agribusinesses,
input shops, nurseries and input distribution programmes.
At present, however, the compost produced is used on the farmers' own fields (machambas)
or sold informally, with no quality standard, no label, no information on how to use it and no
legal registration. Under these conditions:
Buyers do not trust the quality of the product (maturity, moisture, presence of weed seeds,
pathogens or impurities);
The product cannot be sold in input shops or to companies and projects that require a
registered and tested fertiliser;
Farmers are unable to charge a price that pays for the labour and materials invested.
A collective brand, based on a common quality standard, a legal label and clear rules of use,
will turn the compost into a reliable commercial product with its own price and access to formal
channels. Core principle: in the case of a fertiliser, the brand is a promise of quality and
safety. Brand creation must therefore go hand in hand with defining the product's quality
standard and its legal registration, and not only with design.
Description of Services
These Terms of Reference (ToR) are intended to guide the hiring of a consultant or firm to
create a collective brand for the organic compost produced by farmers supported by the
SUSTAIN Pro Project, including brand strategy, visual identity, packaging, legal labelling,
quality standard, registration and management model.
Geographic area and beneficiaries: farmers, farmer groups, associations and cooperatives
supported by the SUSTAIN Pro Project that produce or will produce organic compost in the
districts of Vanduzi and Báruè, Manica Province.
Product and formats:
Main product: matured and sieved organic compost, produced according to a standardised
protocol common to all production units.
Formats to be studied: bulk (for companies and projects); 50 kg and 25 kg bags (for farmers
and input shops); and 5 kg and 10 kg bags (for nurseries, urban gardening and home gardens).
Future extensions: the brand system should be able to accommodate variants such as
vermicompost, bokashi or enriched compost without the need for redesign.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a membership union of government and civil society organisations working on nature conservation and sustainable development. IUCN procures consulting services, goods and works for its projects worldwide through the IUCN Procurement Portal. For all contracts above CHF 25,000 IUCN selects contractors through a formal competitive tendering process under its Standard Operating Procedure 1 (Open Procedure). Interested bidders must register on the portal, review the Terms of Reference, the Conditions for Participating and the standard contract, and submit their technical and financial proposals through the portal before the stated deadline. Questions must be raised through the portal's Q&A function before the deadline for questions.
