Faba bean is an important Australian pulse crop and export commodity, supplying premium food and feed markets where visual grain quality is a key determinant of market access, classification and value. Buyers place strong emphasis on seed coat colour, colour retention and seed size uniformity, with these traits directly influencing grading outcomes, market acceptance and the price received throughout the value chain. Australian breeding programs currently have limited access to the genetic resources, molecular markers and high-throughput phenotyping tools needed to efficiently improve these traits. Recent advances in genomics, artificial intelligence, digital imaging and data analytics provide new opportunities to accelerate genetic gain and develop more effective breeding solutions.This four-year investment will develop the knowledge, genetic resources and breeding-enabling tools required to improve seed coat colour stability and seed size uniformity in Australian faba beans. The investment will investigate the genetic, physiological, biochemical and environmental drivers underlying visual grain quality, including the mechanisms responsible for seed coat oxidation and post-harvest darkening. Activities should consider both genetic and non-genetic contributors to trait expression, including the effects of storage conditions, handling practices and environmental influences on grain quality outcomes.A key component of the investment will be the development and validation of modern phenotyping and analytical tools to enable routine selection for visual grain quality traits. This includes the application of artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital imaging and high-throughput phenotyping approaches to objectively measure seed coat colour stability, seed size uniformity and other commercially important visual attributes. Identification and incorporation of valuable genetic variation for improved seed coat colour stability and seed size uniformity will enable development of breeder-ready germplasm for use in Australian faba bean breeding programs. Germplasm should demonstrate measurable improvements in visual grain quality traits and be supported by associated genetic, phenotypic and validated molecular marker datasets to facilitate rapid integration into breeding pipelines.Strong and ongoing collaboration with Australian commercial and public faba bean breeding programs will be a core requirement of the investment. Breeding programs should be engaged throughout the project to help guide trait prioritisation, phenotyping methods, validation activities and deployment pathways. This will ensure outputs are aligned with market requirements and breeding priorities and can be rapidly incorporated into crossing blocks, breeding pipelines and early-generation selection programs.The intended outcome is to provide Australian breeders with the germplasm, molecular markers, phenotyping tools and knowledge required to accelerate the development of future faba bean varieties with improved visual grain quality, greater market suitability and reduced risk of classification downgrades. These advances will help maintain existing market premiums, improve storage and marketing flexibility, protect Australia's reputation as a supplier of high-quality faba beans and strengthen the long-term competitiveness and value of the Australian faba bean industry.

The following are mandatory conditions with which a Tenderer must comply to participate in this procurement process:1 The Tenderer and any subcontractor must not be named on the Consolidated List, being the list of persons and entities who are subject to targeted financial sanctions or travel bans under Australian sanction laws, as maintained by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.2 The Tenderer and any subcontractor must not have a judicial decision against it (not including decisions under appeal) relating to employee entitlements and who have not paid the claim.3 The Tenderer must be a single legal entity or recognised firm of partners except where the Tender is submitted by a consortium and the Tender specifies that each member of the proposed consortium will be party to the contract.4 The Tenderer and any proposed subcontractor must be compliant with theWorkplace Gender Equality Act 2012, theModern Slavery Act 2018and any other applicable labour laws and standards in the jurisdiction in which they operate.
