Description

Central Highlands Regional Council operates the Opal Street Water Treatment Plant (WTP) located in Emerald, Queensland. The WTP incorporates four rapid gravity sand filters which form a critical component of the potable water treatment process. Each filter is currently protected by an individual structural steel roof structure. Over time, these roof structures have deteriorated and are approaching the end of their serviceable life. In addition to their deteriorated condition, the existing roof structures do not adequately facilitate the operational requirements associated with periodic filter media replacement. During future filter media replacement campaigns, one-tonne bulk sandbags are required to be lowered into the filter compartments via crane. The existing roof structures do not provide suitable openings through which these bags can be safely lowered into the filters.
