About IUCN
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the world's largest and most diverse
environmental network, bringing together governments, civil society organizations, Indigenous
Peoples' organizations, experts, and partners to advance nature conservation and sustainable
development. Guided by its vision of “a just world that values and conserves nature” IUCN provides

scientific knowledge, policy advice, and practical solutions to address the interconnected challenges
of biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution. Through its 2026-2029 Programme, IUCN
promotes transformative action across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems while
supporting equitable and sustainable use of natural resources.
The IUCN IslandPlas Project
The IslandPlas project is a regional initiative led by IUCN with support from The Coca-Cola
Foundation to accelerate the transition towards a circular plastics economy across seven African
island territories: Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius, Seychelles, Zanzibar, Cabo Verde, and São Tomé
and Príncipe. The project seeks to reduce plastic pollution by strengthening collection, recovery, and
recycling systems, supporting innovation and entrepreneurship, improving livelihoods for informal
waste sector workers, and fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships. Through community-driven
solutions, policy engagement, and investment in circular economy infrastructure, IslandPlas aims to
prevent plastic leakage into terrestrial and marine ecosystems while contributing to healthier,
cleaner, and more resilient island communities.
The project aims to achieve, among other results:
Indicator Target
Plastic waste collected and recovered 14,000 tons
Plastic waste recycled Approximately 5,600 tons
Informal waste sector actors supported Approx. 9,600 persons
Community collection systems established Multiple PlastiNetwork hubs operational across seven
islands
Capital mobilized for innovation and USD 2 million
enterprise development
Island states implementing circular economy 7 countries/islands

About the Islandplas Regional Exchange Workshop
The workshop will be the first regional learning and adaptive management platform for IslandPlas
stakeholders since full-scale, on-the-ground implementation began in January 2026 with national
Implementing Partners and community grantees. It will bring together about 50 members partners
composed of IUCN project officers, implementing partners, community grantees, informal waste
actors from across the participating island countries to reflect on progress, exchange experiences,
and solve problems together.
Workshop objectives
The overall objective is to enhance the effectiveness of the IslandPlas project implementation through

peer learning, adaptive management, collaborative problem-solving, and the development of an
actionable roadmap to accelerate implementation.
To achieve this, the workshop will first take stock of where the project stands. Participants will
review progress against targets and workplans and assess how well the PlastiNetwork model and its
priorities work in different island contexts. They will also evaluate the approaches used across the
value chain, including community mobilization, engagement of the informal waste sector, material
aggregation and logistics, establishment of processing infrastructure, and overall value chain
development. Experiences in managing different plastic polymers (PET, HDPE, LDPE, PP, and mixed
flexible plastics) will be shared.
The workshop will then examine barriers that are holding implementation back including operational,
institutional, fiduciary, and reporting challenges, and collaboratively identify and propose actionable
suitable solutions
Additionally the workshop assess how existing project management tools are used, including the
Kobo Toolbox reporting system, financial reporting templates, procurement tracking tools, grant
management systems, and monitoring and learning frameworks. From this analysis they will develop
corrective actions and practical solutions for the bottlenecks identified.
Finally, the workshop will build the foundations for the next phase. It will strengthen communication
and coordination among IUCN, implementing partners, community grantees, governments, and
private-sector actors, and reinforce the network of Implementing Partners and grantees as a platform
for collaboration, resource mobilization, mutual learning, and collective action, supporting
sustainability and scale-up. Participants will also explore how Responsible Sourcing Framework (RSF) [...]
