About IUCN
IUCN is a membership Union uniquely composed of both government and civil society organisations. It
provides public, private and non-governmental organisations with the knowledge and tools that enable
human progress, economic development and nature conservation to take place together.
Created in 1948, IUCN is now the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network, harnessing
the knowledge, resources and reach of more than 1,400 Member organisations and around 15,000
experts. It is a leading provider of conservation data, assessments and analysis. Its broad membership
enables IUCN to fill the role of incubator and trusted repository of best practices, tools and international
standards.
IUCN provides a neutral space in which diverse stakeholders including governments, NGOs, scientists,
businesses, local communities, indigenous peoples’ organisations and others can work together to forge
and implement solutions to environmental challenges and achieve sustainable development.
Working with many partners and supporters, IUCN implements a large and diverse portfolio of
conservation projects worldwide. Combining the latest science with the traditional knowledge of local
communities, these projects work to reverse habitat loss, restore ecosystems and improve people’s
well-being.

Sustainability and Inclusion Strategy for Growth corridors in Africa (Sustain Pro) is implemented by
IUCN and funded by Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). Sustain Pro
programme goal is to create productive landscapes that balance economic growth with enhanced food
security, land health and social prosperity, contributing to the development of sustainable food
systems.
SUSTAIN Pro aims for sustainable food systems and healthy productive landscapes in Mozambique
and Tanzania, through: (i) upscaling solutions for sustainable agricultural production; (ii) restoring land
health through multi-stakeholder partnerships, and (iii) investing in sustainable and inclusive value
chains to drive systemic change. In Tanzania, the programme is implemented in two targeted
landscapes of the SAGCOT (Kilombero and Ihemi Clusters).
Agricultural production goes hand in hand with the use of agrochemicals, which in turn generates
agrochemical waste that, if not properly managed, may be disposed of indiscriminately, posing risks to
the environment and surrounding communities. To address this challenge, the project constructed
Vizimba (agrochemical waste management chambers) to provide designated facilities for the collection
and temporary storage of agricultural waste. Unfortunately, some of these facilities have been
vandalized and damaged by unknown individuals, compromising their functionality. The project
therefore intends to renovate the affected Vizimba to restore their functionality and ensure that they
continue to support proper agrochemical waste management in the targeted areas (Ifakara and Kilosa).
